Process Diary
Lynda week 1
Dear Diary,
Here are some answers to the questions when I first started using wordpress. How do you begin? What do all the new terms mean? This will give you some answers:
- How do you begin creating a WordPress site on your own server? You need to have a domain name and a host. You add wordpress to your host site to start creating your wordpress site.
- In your own words, what is the difference between posts and pages? Posts are active, changing and can be categorized. Pages are static and are not organized or categorized. They have to be navigated to.
- In your own words, what is the difference between categories and tags?Categories can be grouped together and can have subcategories. Tags explain what it is or what it contains.
- Explain the difference between the different page (published, draft, etc) statuses. Explain why you might use each state. Published means that it’s active on your site and people can see it. Draft is when you are working on a page and it might not be ready to publish or could be published at a later date. Update is when a page is published but you want to make changes to it, then you would need to publish it again for the changes to be active or you could save it as a draft to publish at a later time.
- a. Give an example of categories you may have on your site and I might have a category for different types of art that I have done like Designs, Illustration, Branding, Custom Art, Photography etc. b. give an example of how you would use tags on your site if you feel you will need to. I may want to use tags like “photoshop” on anything that I did that I used photoshop to create, as well as “illustrator” and other programs I have used. Or even medium tags like “charcoal”, “ink” etc.
- What are “excerpts”? Excepts are a short explanation of what a post is about. That way you can control what people see instead of it being what ever the beginning of the post is.
- What is the “more” tag used for? To either truncate or add an excerpt to a post. It’s a “read more” to shorten a post for easier scrolling and navigation by the visitor.
- How do you add an image to a page on your site? You can add it local or embedded. In post at top click “add image” then insert media and upload file. Or you can add “image gallery” and drop all images in. To add embedded images you just insert the URL.
- What is the difference between a featured image and an image within the main text editor? Featured images are outside the post. Where they are placed depends on the theme. In a search or link they will be the lead image. They do not show a caption.
- How would you embed a video from YouTube onto your site? Just paste the link in the post where you want the video to appear.
- Why is it important to use page templates? Page templates are important so that your site has a constant, consistent layout and organized feel to it.
- What is page hierarchy? Knowing which pages are the parent (more important) that led to the children (lower/sub categories) that led to the grandchildren (lower/sub) etc.
I hope that helped. It certainly helped me to figure out where to begin.
Catch you on the flippity Diary!
